What a ride it has been over the last year. Last summer, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was fired by Marvel from the third film after a history of nasty tweets were brought to light. The tweets joked heavily about pedophilia and other very tasteless topics, they were made long before Gunn helmed Guardians but it was enough to ruffle the feathers of people online.
Gunn left Twitter and went dark for several months until being tapped by DC to direct a sequel/soft-reboot to Suicide Squad. Months after a manufactured controversy about crude tweets saw Disney eject Gunn from the third movie in his Marvel cosmic series, Marvel Studios has confirmed that, shockingly, the director will return after all.
In a rare turn, director James Gunn is once again heading up up the third installment of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series. Gunn, who directed the previous two films, was fired over the summer when offensive tweets dating from between 2008 and 2011 resurfaced after being promoted by right-wing personalities like Jack Posobiec and Mike Cernovich.
The news comes courtesy of Deadline, who has since confirmed things with both Marvel and Gunn’s representatives.
